MEMO
To: Parks and Recreation Commissioners
From: Mary Saarion
Subject: Fall Program Update - 1998
Date: August 19, 1998
Fall programs and activities have been completed. City Newsletter is scheduled to be distributed
to residences in Mounds View the last weekend of August. Activities include afterschool
activities, school days out activities, Fall Swimming lessons, Senior Citizen activities, youth and
adult sports and athletics, special events and trips, adapted recreation programs (a partnership
with other departments), and community activities happening here and in neighboring cities.
It is staff's delight to think that we will be able to program activities out of the Community
Center for Winter season. The real enjoyable part will be programming activities during the week
day for especially senior citizens and pre-schoolers. Whereas we didn't have a facility to program
out of before, now we have a beautiful facility to offer activities and programs.
A City resident named Theresa Wilts has been volunteering Tuesday and Thursday mornings for
the Parks and Recreation Department. Theresa is a citizen of Canada and is here with her
husband for a 6 year stint at his work in computers. Theresa, without a green card, cannot work -
but is very capable and willing to provide volunteer services. She is very energetic and
personable. She is a great customer service person and seems willing to do most anything. I have
been trying to give her "enjoyable" tasks such as planning trips for seniors. She looks forward to
working with senior citizens at the Community Center - which is really fortunate for Mounds
View!
The Super Quad Rink is scheduled to open in October of this year. Many skating programs will
be offered to the communities of the area by the Sports Commission staff. Look for more
information regarding these opportunities. There is some negotiation going on between the Sports
Commission and Irondale and Mounds View Hockey Associations regarding times for hockey
practices and games. I trust that the differences will be resolved as the initiation season of the
rink operations and programming provide a learning experience for all participating agencies.
Lakeside Park beach operations went very good this summer with good water duality and lots of
park users. There were no accidents, few closed dates and pretty good swimming weather: The
introduction of a Junior Lifeguard program seemed to work Lakeside to assist on occasions when
only one lifeguard is scheduled or on duty. Unplanned costs were damage ( as a result of early
summer storms) incurred by the small "library" building's electrical shaft which required a $800
electrical repair. Also, recently a car ran into a street sign and park cyclone fence with an
estimated repair cost of $400.
