4
111/1 MEMO TO: Par . • reation Coumissioners
r
FROM: Sta
DATE: Febru.ry 24, 1982
RE: Park shelter buildings
As you 're aware the Fire Chief and City Council formally condemned our
park shelter buildings during the past year. As a result we rented portable
buildings to meet our winter skating needs. In addition we have already
removed the Oakwood Park shelter building and the Woodcrest and Hillview
buildings are scheduled to be moved in the next two months.
Staff updated the Council at their regularly scheduled February 22, 1982 meetina
on our building progress and the Mayor raised the issue of possibly repairing
existing buildings rather than constructing new ones. Staff reiterated their
position that the existing buildings were in such poor condition that we could
11111 not justify repairing the buildings and they did not work into our long range
park plan from both a function and location perspective. The Mayor's major
concern centered around vandalism; parks in general and the buildinas specifically.
As this issue is one that will be a major discussion point for months to come
staff indicated to the Council that we would raise the issue before the Park
Commission. Staff has no formal recommendation regarding the status of park shelter
buildings but would like to offer the following support data:
1. The two buildings at Hillview and Woodcrest have experienced additional
vandalism over the winter months .
2. The Oakwood building has been removed.
3. We have purchased a building for Lambert Park,
4. There are no buildings at Groveland, City Hall , Silver View, Random or
111/1 Ardan Park.
5. The buildings at Greenfield and Lambert could be salvaged, but we have
removed the interior planks to construct benches for the portable buildings,
