"(
'4111111) Ramseiiiiity County Job Training Program
Corner of Frost Avenue & Manton Street Maplewood, MN 55109 (612) 770-8900
wv. r oourrr
MINNESOTA EMERGENCY EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT ACT (MEED)
In response to Minnesota's high unemployment and sagging economy, the
Minnesota Legislature passed the MEED Act last May. The short term
effects of MEED will be felt through providing jobs for unemployed
Minnesotans which in turn will stimulate struggling Minnesota bus-
inesses. Over the long run, Minnesotans employed through the MEED
will gain marketable work experience and new skills which will pro-
vide the impetus for MEED employers to grow into strong and viable
businesses.
To achieve these desired affects, the Legislature has allocated
$70 million to the MELD Program, of which $2.25 million is to be
used in Suburban Ramsey County (defined as Ramsey County exclusive
of the City of St. Paul ) . This money will he used to develop job ;..
opportunities in both the public and private sectors by providing
employers with up to $4 per hour wage subsidy. In addition, up to
$1 per hour is provided to employers to cover the costs of supplying
various employee fringe benefits. Employers participating in the
• MEED Program are encouraged to supplement the $4 per hour wage
subsidy to achieve a wage level commensurate with prevailing wages
for comparable positions.
Aside from the obvious benefits received by MEED employers, the fol-
lowing benefits are also available:
A) A lame pool of candidates possessing a vast range of skills
and educational backgrounds is available to fill employer
requests.
B) The employer dictates the number of job candidates to be
referred for interviewing.
C) Prior to referral , all candidates are prescreened as to
their meeting the jcb description qualifications.
D) An employer is under no obligation to hire a referral
candidate and may withdraw frau the Program at any time
up until the point a candidate is actually hired and the
employer contract is signed.
111/1
Office of Employment & Training
An Eq - ")pportunit. ;Moyer
