111/1
October 2, 1984
Dear Resident:
During the past two years, our department has been working in conjunction with
the Minnesota and U.S. Departments of Agriculture in the trapping, and site
inventory of the gypsy moth within the City of Mounds View. The gypsy moth is
a serious defoliator of trees which may have been accidentally introduced into
our community. During the past two years, we have experienced trappings of
the gypsy moth and we are currently in the process of following up with a door
to door survey to detect egg masses of the gypsy moth. This survey will be
conducted Wednesday, October 3 through Friday, October 5 and involve two or
more people checking homeowner's outside property including trees, picnic
tables, lawn chairs, trailers, etc. Each inspector will be wearing a State
III/1
I.D. badge and they will be knocking on your door to introduce themselves. It
is imperative that we survey all the property to provide the necessary inform-
ation to establish the likely introduction points of the gypsy moth.
In addition to the survey, which will be conducted during the next three days,
we are trying to best determine how the gypsy moth may have been introduced to
our community. The gypsy moth problem is predominatly an eastern state pro-
blem, and has just recently been experienced west of Ohio. To assist in our
survey process, we would appreciate any information that you might be able to
offer regarding trips, family vacations or vistors that you may have had in
the past five years to states east of Ohio. If you or one of your family mem-
bers made a trip to one of the eastern states, I would appreciate it if you
would contact myself directly at 784-3055, ext. #41, so we can include this
information as part of our gypsy moth egg mass survey. All information will
be kept in the strictest of confidence, and it will only be utilized to better
serve the state and federal agencies.
Once the survey is completed in the next three days, we will be updating each
of the residents as to our results and what type of control program, if any,
might be necessary. It should be noted that there is no cost to the City and/
or the homeowner for any of the detection surveying and control options,
should they become necessary in the future. We appreciate your cooperation on
this issue, and should you have any questions regarding the gypsy moth survey,
feel free to contact myself or our City Forester Rick Wriskey directly at
Mounds View City Hall.
11111
operely,
c.lCt ' bi
