Mounds View City Council
Regular Meeting
Page Nine
October 11, 1993
Councilmember Trude stated that, in her opinion, the park should
retain its current name. Trude stated that her reasons for this was
that the park was created, owned and founded by the individuals
who lived in the two cities. The cities of Mounds View and Spring Lake
Park agreed to maintain the park a This park was given to the two
cities. The name of the park should remain as the people who created
and founded the park have given a lot more than money. Trude stated
that she appreciated what the Lions have done for the park, but that
they were given a plaque dedicated to them for that work. Trude also
stated that she would like the conditions of the deed reviewed. Trude
stated that the City appears to have a policy of naming parks after
their locations not after people or organizations.
Trude further stated that there have been implications that no more
funding will come from the Spring Lake Park Lion's Club if the Park
isn't renamed. The City should not bend to extortion.
Councilmember Blanchard gave some background on Lakeside Park stating
that the park was given to the boosters club in Spring Lake Park by a
developer named Bronson-Erickson in 1941. The park was kept going by
this committee and the City became involved. The people of the city
' purchased 1/2 lot so that Ramsey County people could participate at the
park. The park was then given to the two cities as a park and the Park
and Recreation Departments of both cities agreed to maintain the park.
Bill Frits, 8072 Long Lake Road, commented that Lakeside Park and
Mounds View's involvement with the park goes back to when Mounds View
was a Township. The little red building on the park used to be the
Ramsey County Library.
Mayor Linke stated that there are very few members left in the original
boosters club.
Councilmember Quick stated that there is a park called Lambert Park.
named after a large property owner and a road, Hodges Lane, named after
a former Councilmember, Don Hodges and another road was named Grabowski
Way or Place which contradicts the policy of not naming sites in the
City after people.
Mayor Linke stated that some place in the park there should be-some
type of recognition of those individuals that actually started the park
and turned it over to the two cities.
MOTIONjSECOND: Trude/Blanchard to Table Resolution No. 4430 in Support
of Renaming of Lakeside Park to Lakeside Lion's. Park
VOTE: 3 ayes 2 nays Motion Carried
