Mounds View City Council December 13, 2004
Regular Meeting Page 2
• 1 Dave Jahnke, 8428 Eastwood Road, provided the Council with a handout regarding golf courses
2 that were in danger or already gone. He stated that this year the Bridges had lost $193,000. He
3 questioned why the legal costs were paid by the City rather than the golf course.
4
5 Mayor Linke stated that the City Council had voted 3-2 to have the legal fees paid by the General
6 Fund. He stated that legal fees for anything else, such as Park and Recreation or Public Works,
7 would have been paid by the City.
8
9 Mr. Jahnke stated that Blaine is building a new golf course at the Blaine Soccer Center and
1 o would be in competition with the Bridges Golf Course.
11
12 Council Member Quick stated that the Bridges Golf Courses did very well this year, and that the
13 number of rounds was right where it should be, and it is doing better than a lot of golf courses in
14 the area.
15
16 Mr. Jahnke stated that 15 golf courses are closing this year.
17
18 Council Member Quick stated he wanted to do a survey to find out what the people want.
19
20 Council Member Stigney stated that the issue boils down to whether the Mounds View residents
21 can afford a golf course, and the golf course is projected to break even after 12 years. He stated
22 that Medtronics is something that they need to look at. He stated that the golf course is only
• 23 serving 15 percent of the population, so whether the residents wish to pay a lot of money to
24 maintain the golf course, he doesn't wish to. He stated he wanted to reduce the tax base and
25 wanted to bring in a business that would increase the tax base.
26
27 Edwin Benson, 5108 Long Lake Road, stated that he is for the golf course, and that you can play
28 18 holes of golf in an hour and a half. He questioned how the financing would be done for
29 Medtronics if they came in.
30
31 Richard Sonterre, 5060 Red Oak Drive, thanked Council Member Quick for his 20 years of
32 service on the Mounds View City Council, and he stated that Council Member Quick had treated
33 most people fairly.
34
35 7. CITY BUDGET QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS
36
37 None.
38
39 8. JUST AND CORRECT CLAIMS.
40
41 Council Member Stigney inquired whether the reimbursement for the sump pumps on pages 20
42 and 21 were the same residence or two different residences.
43
44 Public Works Director Lee stated he assumed they were two separate residences, but he would
• 45 check to confirm that.
