MOUNDS VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />SCHOOL BOARD PROCESS FOR SETTING SHORT AND LONG-TERM GOALS <br />(This "working document" was approved at the 8-22-83 School Board meeting.) <br />1 I. Background <br />A. District #621 is committed to the philosophy and overall goal (direction) of <br />providing each K-12 student with a quality education. Indeed, the District's <br />reputation, traditions, and vision for the future clearly are based on excel- <br />lence in teaching and learning. <br />B. Additionally, the School District believes that learning is a life-long <br />endeavor and that a quality public school system must do everything possible <br />to assist all residents, regardless of age, to accomplish personal educational <br />goals. <br />II. The Reason for a Goal -Setting Process <br />A. To maintain excellence in all School District programs and services, it is <br />necessary from time to time for the School Board to review what the <br />community's needs are (students, parents, staff members — everyone) and then <br />to adopt short and long-term goals to meet these needs. <br />B. The specific objectives (plans) needed to carry out the goals are developed <br />and coordinated closely with the District's annual budget -setting process <br />which begins in November. <br />III. The School Board Task <br />A. By November 1993 the School Board, after a needs analysis, will adopt short <br />and long-term goals for District #621. <br />IV. The Goal -Setting Process and Timeline in General <br />A. August 22, 1983: School Board approves a plan for assessing needs and <br />establishes a timeline for meeting the November deadline. <br />B. September -October, 1983: <br />I. Gather information using multiple approaches <br />2. Administration analyzes information and categorizes the issues <br />3. School Board seeks citizen input at informational meetings(Turtle Lake, <br />September 26; and Chippewa, October 24) <br />C. November 1983: <br />I. School Board work session scheduled for early in the month. <br />a. Review information as analyzed and synthesized by administration <br />b. Consider administration's work on the implications of data <br />c. Develop tentative goal statements and set preliminary priorities <br />■'. <br />
