Mounds View City Council January 26, 2026 <br /> Regular Meeting Page 7 <br /> 1 Council Member Smith explained she spoke with the police chief earlier today and then reviewed <br /> 2 a press release from the Law Enforcement Labor Services that called for federal and state <br /> 3 emergency summit on immigration enforcement in Minnesota. She then reviewed a statement from <br /> 4 Executive Director Jim Mortenson noting he believed the lack of clarity, cooperation, <br /> 5 communication and coordination between federal, state and local government was unsustainable. <br /> 6 She commented on the need for clarity and coordination going forward to get everyone on the <br /> 7 same page and to begin rebuilding trust. <br /> 8 <br /> 9 Council Member Meehlhause reported the City Administrator and himself attended the Charter <br /> 10 Commission meeting last week where the group discussed Council vacancies and compensation. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 Council Member Meehlhause explained City Administrator Zikmund, Police Chief Zender, <br /> 13 Council Member Gunn and himself attended a celebration at Fire Station 3 in Blaine last week. He <br /> 14 stated this event was held to celebrate the Centennial Fire Department becoming part of the SBM <br /> 15 Fire Department. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Council Member Gunn stated she was part of the 50,000 people that were in downtown <br /> 18 Minneapolis. She explained this was an amazing event to be a part of. She indicated this made her <br /> 19 proud to be a Minnesotan and she was proud of the people who were willing to gather and protect <br /> 20 what she believed was important to the community. She reported she did not believe ICE or DHS <br /> 21 were law enforcement. Rather, she saw the Mounds View Police Department as law enforcement <br /> 22 because they were not hidden and wore badges. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Mayor Lindstrom indicated he would be attending the Daddy Daughter Dance this Saturday with <br /> 25 his daughter. <br /> 26 <br /> 27 Mayor Lindstrom explained he would be attending a joint school board meeting on Thursday, <br /> 28 February 5. <br /> 29 <br /> 30 Mayor Lindstrom stated he would be conducting clemency work on Friday, February 6. He noted <br /> 31 on Tuesday, January 20 he attended a Board of Pardons meeting. <br /> 32 <br /> 33 Mayor Lindstrom reported the Community Engagement Committee met and discussed events that <br /> 34 would be hosted in 2026. <br /> 35 <br /> 36 Mayor Lindstrom explained on Thursday, January 22 he celebrated eight years of sobriety. He <br /> 37 commented if it wasn't for the first responders in the community, he would not be alive. He <br /> 38 thanked the first responders for serving the community well and for doing their work with dignity <br /> 39 and integrity. <br /> 40 <br /> 41 Mayor Lindstrom stated the community saw a person get killed this past weekend in a very reckless <br /> 42 manner. He did not imagine there was a need to have eight people on top of one person and then <br /> 43 for this person to be shot. He stated this was not okay. He reported his dad used to work at the VA <br /> 44 and his father knew him. He indicated he has a series of ordinances he would like to see passed. <br /> 45 He did not believe it was unreasonable for federal law enforcement agents to let the City of Mounds <br /> 46 View know when they will be in the community.
