Page 3
Mayor Miedtke said in view of no clear cut opposition to the sidewalks
per se, he would move that the Council approve the plans for the re-
construction of 29th Avenue as presented by the Engineer but with sidewalks
included on both sides of the street from Stinson Blvd. to Highway 8.
There was no second of the motion.
Motion by Councilman Sundland, seconded by Councilman Sauer to approve
the plans for the reconstruction of 29th Avenue as presented by the
Engineer for submission to the Minnesota Highway Department for
application of MSA funding.
Before voting on the motion, Councilman Stauffer and Councilman Haik
said they wanted the motion amended to extend the existing walkways
on the north side of 29th and east of Silver Lake Road from Rooelle
Avenue to Silver Lake Road at the same time that the present pathways
are reconstructed as per the plans for reconstructing the roadway in
that area. Mr. Shabaz said he felt it was just as important to provide
sidewalks on Armour Terrace and Crestview Drive so that pedestrians and
cyclists could safely reach the sidewalks on 29th. The contrast in
traffic counts on those streets with that for 29th was cited as a
justification for not giving them the same priority.
Councilman Sundland said he would rather consider the whole sidewalk
question after the new roadway had been constructed when he felt the
need for sidewalks could better be eialuated.
Motion by Councilman Haik, seconded by Councilman Stauffer to amend the
motion to include the reconstruction of the existing walkways in the
reconstruction plans for 29th Avenue and to extend the walkways on
the north side of 29th from Rozelle to Silver Lake Road.
Voting on the amendment:
Aye: Stauffer, Sauer, Miedtke, Haik
Nay: Sundland
Amendment carried.
Voting on the amended motion:
Aye: Sauer, Stauffer, Miedtke, Haik
Nay: Sundland
Motion carried.
The meeting was recessed from 9:05 P.M. to 9:24 P.M.
Motion by Councilman Stauffer, seconded by Councilman Sundland to
authorize the City to enter into a lease agreement with Hennepin
County for the use of the public safety communications equipment.
Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Councilman Stauffer, seconded by Councilman Haik to approve
the passenger waiting shelter agreements with the MTC and to authorize
the necessary signatures when the official documents are received.
Motion carried unanimously.
