There were over a dozen members of the Golden Heirs present and their
request that the City help them to obtain more economical transpor-
tation to points of interest which they would like to visit but often
found not economically feasible was made by their spokesman, Joseph
Sroga, 3207 Stinson Boulevard. It was his suggestion that if the
group could obtain a bus at a nominal cost the City would provide
financial assistance with the insurance. The group felt that since
parks and the swimming pool had been provided by the City for its
younger citizens, it was now time for recreational facilities to be
provided for the senior citizens.
The Community Development Grant funds available for senior citizen
projects under which a senior citizen center is being planned for
the City was discussed with the Golden Heirs' president, Harold Cope,
3100 Roosevelt Street N.F., saying the group had not indicated much
enthusiasm for the center because they understood it would have to
be shared with other groups. They were assured that this was not
true and were told of the availability of other City Hall facilities
for their meetings and activities as well. Mr. Fornell also told
them that the requested bus was not an eligible use of the grant
funds.
Councilman Haik then explained how the City's Community Services was
just being transferred to the school district because they, rather
than the City, were able to obtain the funding necessary for its
support and school authorities would have to be brought into the
consideration of the proposal.
Motion by Councilman Sundland and seconded by Councilman Stauffer to
direct the Manager to converse with the Superintendent of District
282 about the project and to investigate how neighboring communities
had provided such services to their senior citizens and to report
the results of such conversations regarding the practicality of ob-
taining the requested bus to the Council at its next meeting.
Motion carried unanimously.
The meeting was recessed from 8:25 to 8:40 during which time the
Manager and several of the Council took the Golden heirs on a tour
of the proposed senior citizen center.
fiction by Councilman Stauffer and seconded by Councilman Sauer to
reschedule the December Council meetings to December 7th and 21st to
avoid conflict with the holiday season activities.
Motion carried unanimously.
The Attorney then suggested that there be an official notification
of the change in meeting dates and fir. Fornell said such notification
could also be provided in the newsletter.
(3)
