St. Anthony-New Brighton School District #282 Presentation. Bob Laney, <br />Superintendent, and Wendy Webster, Director of Community Services and <br />Communications, presenting. <br />Superintendent Laney stated the School District is in the process of developing its strategic plan <br />and wanted to publicly thank Ms. Webster for leading the strategic planning process. He stated <br />they received input from over 700 community members and held several small group meetings <br />resulting in the creation of a Strategic Planning Committee that developed a mission, vision, and <br />values and three strategic objectives. He also thanked Councilmember Jenson for his <br />participation on the Strategic Planning Committee. He recited the vision statement and presented <br />the core values and recited the three strategic objectives. <br />Ms. Webster recited the new mission statement and stated they believe this mission statement <br />represents the School District's brand. She stated that the incoming Kindergarten class is made <br />up of all residents and Wilshire Park Elementary is made up of 85% residents. She reported that <br />Wilshire Park was recognized last year as a Reward School by the Minnesota Department of <br />Education, the School District was named a top 10 middle school in the State, and U.S. News <br />recognized the high school as a gold medal school in 2013. <br />Superintendent Laney stated that in 2005 the community supported an operating levy that <br />generates $1.8 million of revenue per year or approximately 11 % of the School District's <br />operating costs and this levy expires in 2016. He stated that a capital projects levy was approved <br />in 2003 and was used to provide funds to purchase curriculum and technology and this levy <br />expired in 2011. He stated that in 2008 , the community approved $21 million in building bonds <br />to renovate the schools . He stated that over the past seven years, the State has increased their <br />funding by approximately 1 % per year while the School District's expenses have been increasing <br />an average of 3.6% per year. <br />Ms. Webster advised that the School Board approved a resolution to place two referendum <br />questions on the General Election ballot on November 4th and the first question asks voters to <br />approve an increase in the operating levy that would generate an additional $3 .15 million over <br />ten years. She stated the second referendum question requests new funding for curriculum and <br />technology that would generate $450,000 per year over the next ten years. She indicated that <br />residents received a postcard this week outlining the two referendum questions and the School <br />District is hosting a series of meetings for the public to learn about the referendum with the first <br />meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 16 111, at 6:00 p.m. at the high school. <br />Mayor Faust commended the School District for its efforts and stated he felt that the referendum <br />would receive resounding support from the community. <br />D.
