7 c
DATE
MIlTNESOTA 1990
During 1990, the entire state will be working together to display and highlight Minnesota's
special qualities: our energetic spirit, our rich natural resources, our enthusiastic support of
cultural and sports activities, our pride in our communities, and our active participation
in creating a strong economic future.
So far nearly 500 member communities are cleaning up, fixing up and renovating - doing
some sort of community improvement project. To launch this process, the Legislature, at
the recommendation of Governor Rudy Perpich, provided $1.7 million in community
improvement grants. After the improvements are completed, they'll be shown off at new
or existing festivals, reunions and celebrations scheduled to occur throughout all of 1990.
Arts and entertainment also plays a role in Celebrate MINNESOTA 1990. Dance, theater, and
visual arts, organizations will offer special presentations across the state. One example
includes the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, which will tour Greater Minnesota, featuring an
original work by Minnesota composer Libby Larson.
Also scheduled for 1990 are a variety of sports and recreation events - both for spectators
and participants. Beyond the U.S. Olympic Fistival - '90, there will be The Ride Across
Minnesota (the TRAM-250, a border to border family bicycle tour) , a Duluth Harbor Sailing
Regatta, the Great Mississippi Canoe Festival, the Star of the North Summer and Winter
games, and more!
Perhaps most important, Celebrate MINNESOTA 1990 will provide numerous opportunities
to give something back to Minnesota, and to Minnesotans:
• Charitable contributions to food shelves and amateur athletes will be created through
the'sale of special commemorative Celebrate MINNESOTA 1990 license plates.
• One million trees will be planted on Arbor Day of 1990, helping increase
environmental'awareness and responsibility.
• A major foodshelf drive involving both schools and businesses will occur during
May as a way of encouraging Minnesotans to "Open your heart to the hungry"
• A special youth activities kit offering community service ideas and lessons on
Minnesota history, cultural diversity, technology, arts and the environment has been
distributed through schools and to youth groups across the state.
• Celebrate MINNESOTA 1990 is helping focus the celebration of the 20th anniversary of
Earth Day. Events such as Concerts for the Environment, international symposiums
on clean air and water issues, a statewide river cleanup will help revive the
environmental spirit started in 1970 on Earth Day I.
Celebrate Minnesota 1990
900 American Center Building 150 East Kellogg Boulevard Saint Paul,MN 55101 612/297-1990
