RAMSEY COUNTY
PUBLIC WORKS
Traffic Services
11/8/94
Traffic Signals
Silver Lake Rd & 39th Ave NE
TRF 533
Reconstruct Traffic signals under S.A.P. No. 62-644-18.
The inplace system was constructed and placed into operation Nov. 1975. Reconstruction
of this system is part of a larger project to improve traffic operations along Silver Lake Rd
from County Rd D to Palmer Dr.. Under a separate project traffic signals will be installed
and/or reconstructed on Silver Lake Rd at Silver Lane; at Windsor Lane; at County Rd E;
at 3rd St. NW; at 5th St. NW; at 7th St. NW; at 1694 Ramps; and at Palmer Dr. The
following items list some of the reasons and/or benefits to reconstructing the system at
Silver Lake Rd and 39th Ave. NW.
• Age of the system. Serviceable life of such devices is 20 years. The inplace system
will be 19 years old this month.
• • The reconstructed system will include protected/permissive left turns (i.e., left turns
on a green indication). The inplace system has protected left turns only (green
arrows).
• Coordination and interconnect with systems north and south is part of the project
and will provide better progression and reduce the number of stops.
• New control cable will be included in the project. The County has been
experiencing some difficulty with the control cable at this signal causing increased
malfunctioning equipment.
• New Pedestrian curb-ramps are included at some locations,to improve handicapped
access. ADA compliance.
• New Pedestrian indications with the symbol message are included in the project.
• A reconstructed traffic signal at 39th, interconnected with the other signals on
Silver Lake Rd will allow for minimal impact to traffic operations on Silver Lake
Rd if redevelopment of Apache Plaza occurs in the near future.
• K533 4.doc
