STAFF REPORT
DATE: June 20, 1995
TO: Planning Commission
FROM: Kim Moore-Sykes, Management Assistant
ITEM: Trees on the Stop 'n Go Property
BACKGROUND
I received a call from the Mayor requesting that the Planning Commission review the issue
of the trees on the east side of the Stop 'N Go gas station on 2400 - 37th Avenue NE. Mr.
David Olson contacted Larry Hamer, the Public Works Director and the Mayor to inform
them that in order to install the fencing on the east side of the station as originally agreed
to, he will have to remove the six mature trees.
Mr. Olson is asking the City to allow him to keep the trees as they do provide screening
to the adjacent residential property and are beneficial in a number of ways to the area. He
stated that he will make improvements on the existing fence, build the 6' foot behind the
trees or do whatever the City recommends. If the City recommends that he build the 6'
fence behind the trees, the 6' fence will be too close to the property line and may need a
variance.
The Mayor asked that I report on this situation to the Planning Commission for their
recommendation to the City Council. I have attached for each Commissioner, copies of
the minutes from the August 16, 1994 Planning Commission meeting that discussed fencing
and copies from the Zoning Ordinance that discusses retention of existing trees.
