The Metro Council projects (for the metro area) the number
of elderly persons 85 years of age and over will increase by 25 percent in the 1990s.
The group known as "baby boomers" (people born between 1946 and 1965) triggered the creation of
thousands of new classrooms across the nation. Likewise., in the 1970s and 1980s they were responsible
for the addition of thousands of housing units in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area as well as other parts
of the country. As baby boomers age, the 35 to 49 age group will become the largest age group and
the "baby boomlet," an increase in births to baby boomers, will decline in the 1990s as baby boomers
move out of their child-bearing years. According to the Metro Council, the number of people ages 15
to 24 will continue to decline.
The change in racial composition in Columbia Heights is shown in Table 2. Overall, the percentage of
non-whites has increased from 2.2 percent in 1980 to 4.4 percent in 1990. Those persons of hispanic
rvzs 2
