- 2 - <br /> 4. Stair Risers and Treads: Must conform closely' to the required 4 to 8 <br /> inch vertical riser height, and a 9 to 11 inch tread width. Some pre- <br /> existing non-code steps are considered built-in deficiencies and will be <br /> accepted if provided with reasonable life/safety adaptations such as <br /> lighting and handrails, etc. <br /> Wooden Steps and Landings: Wood must be 'in good condition and of <br /> sufficient strength for all normal and expected uses. <br /> Concrete Steps and Landings: Must be in good condition and repair. <br /> Cracks, shifting and settlement differences greater than 1/2 inch must <br /> be repaired: <br /> Handrails: Required on any set of steps with 4 or more risers. <br /> Handrails must ,be "grippable", 1 .1/2 to 2 inches in diameter as defined <br /> in building code. All handrails must be rigidly secured for safety and <br /> installed as per code requirements in existence at the time of handrail <br /> installation. <br /> Guardrails: Any raised platform 30 inches or greater above .grade or <br /> floor surface, .steps , etc. must be protected with a guardrail . <br /> Guardrails must meet building code requirements in effect at the time of <br /> installation'. <br /> Porches: Must be structurally sound and able to support imposed loads. <br /> Decks: Must be structurally sound and able .to support imposed .loads. <br /> 5. Masonry Chimneys: Must be structurally sound. Large cracks must be <br /> repaired, and missing or badly damaged bricks must be repaired or <br /> replaced. A clay t.ile liner is required for the inside of masonry <br /> chimneys. <br /> Transite Vents (Asbestos Vents) : Because of health/safety reasons, <br /> transite vents shall be removed and/or replaced with other approved <br /> venting system to code, (Class B metal vent, etc.) . (Permit required.) <br /> Metal Chimney Liner: A clay tile liner for masonry chimneys to which <br /> GAS appliances are vented must have a protective interior metal liner <br /> installed to prevent tile liner degradation from moisture and acid <br /> build-up. Masonry chimneys serving oil fired heating plants do NOT <br /> require a protective metal .chimney liner. <br /> Metal (Class "A") ':Chimney: _ Usually. installed for wood burning stove or <br /> fireplace. If installation of the. flue and heater- is approved, any <br /> exposed class "A" vent that -may run up the side of a house must be <br /> covered with a. chaseway to within 1 foot of the top of the flue using a <br /> material. that will blend aesthetically with the existing house siding. <br /> 6. Windows and Window Frames: Replace all broken out. window glass only, <br /> cracked glass will not be required to be replaced under this program. <br /> Sashes, moldings and frames must be in good condition. All windows <br /> shall be equipped with either operational sash ropes and pulleys or some <br /> type of sash guide, holding device to prevent window from falling shut. <br />
