LIGHTING DESIGN
Lighting within Roseville Cornerstone is an intricate part of the design of the entire .
Cornerstone area. A specific lighting standard will be adopted by the City of Roseville for
its streets, as well as -interior private streets. This is a simple one-bulb or two-bulb high
pressure sodium 16-foot to 20 foot tall standard which provides one-foot candle of light at 60
feet distance. On the public right-of-way, all such lights are maintained by the City and
NSP. On private property, individual property owners will have to contract with NSP or other
service providers.
The strength and amount of street and parking lights will be decided by the function of those'
lights. Street lighting luminars should be consistent in design with those used in pedestrian-
scaled lighting along the road systems. The illumination from high pressure sodium lights
should be uniform in color, in intensity, and distribution. As older lights are replaced, the
new high pressure sodium light systems should be installed meeting the general criteria for
foot candles, as well as heights and color of lighting. All poles and supports should be
painted "the Roseville color" - to be adopted by the City.
Generalized lighting standards include the following:
1. Pedestrian sidewalk lighting - 16 feet in height and 1.5 to 2 foot candles; 3 foot
high bollards with concealed lights of 1 foot candle.
2. Road systems, both public and private - No more than 20 feet in height and
1.5 to 2 foot candles.
3. High traffic turning movement areas and heavily used parking lot areas - No
more than 30 feet in height and 2 to 3 foot candles.
4. Development entry areas (within 150 feet thereof) wherein pedestrian and
vehicular traffic may compete for the same space - A maximum of 20 feet in
height and 25 foot candles.
5. Parking structures - 15 to 20 foot candles at entrances and on drive lanes; 10
to 15 foot candles in parking areas.
6. Parking lots.-A maximum of.20 feet in height and 1.5 foot to 2-foot candles.
7. Storage and landscape areas - .5 to 1.5 foot candles.
In addition, specific areas within the Cornerstone may warrant additional pedestrian-scaled
lighting and lower-scaled lighting within landscape areas along walls, within precast bollards,
or as freestanding light sources for pathways, water features, sculptures, or loading areas.
Further lighting in the streetscape itself may be done by illuminating the trees with light sets
in the tree or at the base of the tree. Ground lights should be concealed from view along the
road system.
13
