City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
June 26, 2001
Page 10
Mayor Cavanaugh stated that he thought there were issues regarding public signs that
should be standardized. He added that the Planning Commission should institutionalize
some of the issues that have been brought up with the help of the legal council and draft
something of substance.
Mayor Cavanaugh stated that they could waive the readings. Councilmember Hodson
stated that he was comfortable with the idea of dealing with the issue of operation
standardization.
Mayor Cavanaugh stated that the Legal Council could provide some aid to the Planning
Commission, and that the issue should return to the Planning Commission.
Motion by Councilmember Thuesen to refer ordinance 2001-002 back to the Planning
Commission.
Motion carried unanimously.
Ron Hansen, a Village resident who spoke at the Planning Commission Meeting, asked
when his concerns regarding this issue could be addressed. Mayor Cavanaugh stated that
they have referred the ordinance back to the Planning Commission, and that the
resolution would not be acted on tonight.
Mr. Hansen stated that he had several questions regarding the ordinance change, and felt
that waiting for a month to have them heard would be too late. Mayor Cavanaugh stated
that he could come up and speak, but that he reserved the right to interrupt him, if he felt
his questions were inappropriate based on the decision to refer the ordinance back to the
Planning Commission.
Mr. Hansen came forward and stated he felt the way this thing was going through
indicated that it was a done deal. He stated he learned tonight from Mayor Cavanaugh
that the City of St. Anthony would have an electronic sign.
Mayor Cavanaugh interjected and reminded Mr. Hansen that the specifics of the sign
have gone back to the Planning Commission. He stated that, at the City Council meeting
on July 24, 2001, they would have a recommendation from the Planning Commission,
based on public hearings.
Mr. Hansen asked why they are amending the ordinance. Mayor Cavanaugh responded
that they are amending the ordinance so that the city can build that kind of sign.
Councilmember Thuesen stated that he believed that the majority of the residents see that
an electronic sign could be beneficial to the City. Councilmember Hodson agreed. Mr.
Hansen stated he thought that was untrue.
Mayor Cavanaugh continued that the Wilshire sign was not well thought out.
Councilmember Thuesen stated that the Wilshire sign was an embarrassment to the City.
