City of St. Anthony - Commissions Page 7 of 9
Ken Wolfbauer, owner, stated that their building is located on a very
busy corner of St. Anthony. He referenced the mechanical
structures on top of the building noting that it is very unsightly and it
is their intent to cover it from view. He stated that they have
exposure from three sides of the building and it is their intent to add
landscaping to further enhance the appearance and view from the
highway.
Kathy Wolfbauer stated that the building would probably house five
tenants, all who want their name on the building. She stated that
each business name would be included on the awning and reviewed
with the Commission.
City Manager Mornson clarified that the awning would be placed in
view of Anthony Lane South, County Road C and Highway 88. He
asked if each tenant name would be repeated on each side of the
building. Mr. Wolfbauer reviewed the name placement with the
Commission
Chair Stromgren asked to clarify the height of the awning. Mr. Law
stated that they would be four-foot awnings and reviewed with the
Commission.
Commissioner Young asked if the entire parameter of the structure
lights up or just the lettering and if the entire back lighting would go
around the entire building. Mr. Law stated that it would be a back lit
sign and reviewed with the Commission. He explained that the
awning itself is a vinyl fabric and the lettering is made from a
different type of vinyl that is then applied to the awning. He assured
the Commission that the ownersa€TM priority is to make the building
look good from all sides.
Commissioner Young stated that it would be very useful to see a
sample of the awning and how the light penetrates through it. Mr.
Law stated that he would provide an example for the
Commissions€Tms review.
Chair Stromgren clarified that in the memo the Commission received
from Staff, that the Wolfbauers are looking for a variance to the sign
ordinance for a canopy that is larger than the 150-square feet
allowable per side. Mr. Wolfbauer confirmed stating that the request
is asking for a bit more based on number of sides of the building that
would be considered frontage. Mr. Law reviewed the four options
included in the proposal with the Commission.
Commissioner Jensen stated that based on the second revision, it
appears that the design is evolving and they are now looking for an
awning to cover the mechanical and also signage on awning. He
suggested restructuring their request to incorporate both the awning
and signage needs.
Chair Stromgren stated that the Commission has recently had
several very animated discussions that included public input,
regarding signage at the Cemetery, which is considerably smaller.
He stated that the Community was very against any signage and
suggested that they keep in the mind the residents in the area and
visibility.
http://www.ci.saint-anthony.mn.us/moxie/government/PCag mn/pcminutes1116.shtml _ 12/17/2004
