d
10
INSPECTIONS
We have established three .objectives for our inspection program:
1. Educate the public in fire. safety.
2. Improve' the firefighter's familiarity with the community, its
buildings and its occupancies.-
3. Eliminate hazardous situations.
With these objectives in mind-, we experienced increased inspection
activity in 1983. During 1984 we 'plan to continue this level of
activity and to- improve our knowledge of the fire codes. We are : also,
presently updating our fire - codes and references to be compatible . ..
with the- State Fire Marshal's office as well as our surrounding
communities.
r
FIRE DRILLS
State law requires all schools and nursing homes to conduct fire and
z tornado drills on a regularly scheduled basis. During 1983 we
were involved in 14 such drills.
F
PUBLIC EDUCATION PROJECTS
iRecognizing the value of public education, our department has always
given it a,- high priority° During 1983 the department held various.
classes in fire safety, disaster planning, CPR, first aid, and fire
extinguishers . We taught , 1303 students in these subjects during 1983 .
This number is consistent with the figures for the past couple of
years.
one - of our: more successful annual projects in the "Junior:.Fire Safety:
program for all fourth graders in the City. This program consists
of four hours of instruction in fire safety, use of extinguishers,
home fire inspecting, and escape from fire. There is a written
examination at the end of this course with awards going to the
highest scores. We have improved this program considerably through
information gathered from the National Fire Academy and from pro-
grams conducted by surrounding fire departments .
FIRE PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST
During. 19.83 we -inherited an interesting project from the Mrs. Jaycees.
This project is a poster contest involving all of the students at
Wilshire Park School.- After distributing fire- safety materials and
judging the posters, we .-provided a ride home - in the fire truck for
'r - the fourteen winners. This program was so successful, .we plan to
make it an annual event in the future.
In addition, St: Anthony also participated in the National Fire
Prevention''poster contest. .Our winner in 1983. was ,Vi.cki .Ranzinger.
Vicki lives at '2488 Lydia Avenue and is a fifth grader at St. Charles.
