1. Officers must evaluate the situation as it progresses to determine <br /> whether the pursuit should be terminated. Factors to consider include <br /> those listed in "Evaluating Circumstances of the Pursuit". The pursuit <br /> must be terminated when: <br /> A. In the judgement of the pursuing officer, a clear and unreasonable <br /> danger created by the pursuit outweighs the public interest in <br /> immediate apprehension. <br /> B. The location of the pursued vehicle is no longer known. <br /> 2. The termination of a pursuit does not prohibit the following of a <br /> vehicle at a safe speed, or remaining in the area to re-initiate <br /> pursuit if the opportunity and conditions permit. <br /> 4 —817. 1 'ASSISTANCE TO PERSONS INJURED- IN A PURSUIT- <br /> 1. The Communication Center shall be notified immediately of any <br /> accident and shall notify the appropriate Emergency Medical Service <br /> .(EMS) provider. <br /> 2. If the pursuing officer becomes aware of a potentially significant <br /> injury to a third party resulting from the pursuit, the officer shall <br /> terminate the pursuit and provide medical assistance as necessary unless <br /> - an assisting unit in the immediate vicinity stops to render such assist- <br /> ance. <br /> • 3. Any other units may continue the pursuit if sufficient assistance to <br /> the accident victim is being provided. <br /> 4 - 817.2 TRAINING <br /> 1. Officers shall complete a written examination on their Department <br /> Procedural Directive/Policy on Vehicle Pursuit at a minimum of once <br /> every POST licensing period for the officer (Once every three years) . <br /> 2. Any' deficiencies in test answers will be addressed and the correct <br /> responses shared with the officer. <br /> 3. During the three-year POST licensing period, all officers assigned to <br /> the. Patrol Division will complete training in emergency vehicle operation. <br /> 4. During the annual performance evaluation period, individual needs as <br /> identified in this process relating to vehicle operation will be included <br /> in a remedial training program. <br /> 5. Information obtained from a review of previous department pursuits will <br /> be considered in the overall training needs of the Department and <br /> recommendations for any policy changes. <br /> 6. The training for this policy should include an analysis of the dis- <br /> cretion exercised in deciding when to pursue or terminate a pursuit. <br /> 4 - 817.3 ' POST PURSUIT PROCEDURES <br /> 1. A Pursuit 'Reporting Form must be completed on every pursuit. <br /> 2. Copies of the pursuit form and any accompanying reports shall be <br /> 69 - B SEP 2 51989 <br />
