•
OERTEL ARCHITECTS
1795 SAINT CLAIR AVENUE,SAINT PAUL,MN 55105
TEL:651/696-5186 FAX:651/6965188
DATE: June 3, 2003
TO: City of St. Anthony: Susan Hall
FROM: Jeff Oertel
RE: St. Anthony Fire Station
Fire Department Project Description
The proposed development includes a new, centrally located 13,800 gross square foot
fire station that will serve the entire City of St. Anthony. The building consists of
apparatus bays (to house the emergency vehicles), shop areas, offices, dorm rooms,
restrooms, trainilg areas and related support functions. A multi-story tower is located
at the rear of the building, which includes several balconies. This tower connects to the
exit stair, and will be used for training staff and drying hoses.
The building features spaces typical of a fire department with full-time and on-call
firefighters. Offices, a multiple use training room and sleeping areas are located in a
two story wing, which is on the rear or east side of the site overlooking th park. The
apparatus bays and shop areas are to the west, located directly off of Silver Lake Road.
These vehicle bays are one story in height. The height of the building is under twenty
five feet to the top of the parapet, and the hose tower is additional eight feet taller.
The building will be quite visible by traffic from either direction, but especially from
the south. The site is located at the high point of Silver Lake Road. The existing pump
house site to the south is quite open and this allows for long-range views of the
proposed building at its primary elevation.
For safety purposes, and to minimize disturbance to the residential neighbor to the
north, vehicle access is designed primarily in a one-way, flow-through pattern. There
are curb cuts off of Silver Lake Road at two locations, very close to the ones that exist
for the two residential lots. The north access is essentially the entrance into the
building, and the south access is for the exiting of emergency vehicles, along with
entry/exit for the community and overflow emergency parking.
The site is slightly less than one acre. The terrain slopes down from west to east, with
the high point at the street and the low point at the park directly east of the building.
Storm run-off will be essentially as exists today, except that a small dry pond and
additional storm sewer connections are planned at the rear of the site to assist with run-
off. The existing landscaping at the low end, or east, portion of the site next to the park
