 1
2002 COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER REVIEW
Prepared by Sergeant Diegnau
The Community Service Officer Unit, again for 2002, has been a very
resourceful unit. It has been positive and shown to be a great asset to the St.
Anthony Police Department. This unit is designed to allow non-
sworn/civilian officers to respond to non-emergency/community service type.
calls. This activity allows fulltime officers to remain available for more
serious calls and continue general patrol duties.
This unit consists of two part-time/non-sworn/civilian employees. Each
officer works a total of 20 hours per week. On 08-09-02, 1 received a letter
of resignation from one of our CSO Officers. Due to current budget
restraints, this position has not been replaced.
In 2002 the Community Service Officer Unit documented 892 incidents. A
brief description of some of these incidents, which assisted our patrol staff,
are as follows: vehicle/residential lockouts, traffic control incidents,
animal/wildlife complaints, vehicle parking complaints, general transports,
squad maintenance, and squad equipment inventory. Along with these types
of incidents, the Community Service Officer Unit also assisted the front
office personnel with data entry, general assistance with citizen's at the front
window, drop-off and pickup packages, serve summons and subpoenas,
miscellaneous errands, and picking up needed equipment. Again, these
items listed are just a brief summary and description of the area of
responsibilities that are completed by this unit. Our goals for the year 2003
are to continue utilizing this unit as we have done in the past. Also, we
would like to bring the Community Service Officer Unit back to full strength
by hiring a second officer to join this unit. .
In conclusion, our CSO's continue to be a great asset to the department. Our
CSO's perform many details and errands that would otherwise have to have
been completed by a full-time officer or office staff personnel.
24
