10
• INSPECTIONS
We have established three objectives for our inspection program:
(1) Educate the public in fire safety .
(2) Improve the firefighter ' s familiarity with the community , its
buildings and its occupancies .
( 3) Eliminate hazardous situations .
With these objectives in mind, we experienced increased inspection
activity in 1982. During 1983 we plan to continue this level of
activity and to improve our knowledge of the fire codes . We are also
presently updating our fire codes and references to be compatible
with the State Fire Marshal ' s office as well as our surrounding
communities .
FIRE DRILLS
State law requires all schools and nursing homes to conduct fire and
tornado drills on a regularly scheduled basis . During 1982 we
were involved in 11 such drills .
PUBLIC EDUCATION PROJECTS
Recognizing the value of public education, our department has always
given it a high priority . During 1982. t:ie department held various
classes in fire safety , disaster planning , CPR, first aid , and fire
extinguishers . We taught 1431 students in these subjects during 1982 .
This number is consistent with the figures for the past couple of
years .
During November of last year , our Department hosted a wood burning
safety seminar at the High School . This program met with mixed
success . Although it was extremely informative , it was attended by
only 30-40 citizens . Our Firefighters , however, picked up a wealth
of information which we can distribute to the public .
One of our more successful annual projects is the "Junior Fire Safety
program for all fourth graders in the City . This program consists
of four hours of instruction in fire safety, use of extinguishers ,
home fire inspecting , and escape from fire . There is a written
examination at the end of this course with awards going to the highest
scores . During 1982 we improved his program considerably through
information gathered from the National Fire Academy and from pro-
grams conducted by surrounding fire departments .
1i
•
