11 • FIRE PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST During 1982 we inherited an interesting project from the .Mrs . Jaycees . This project is a poster contest involving all of the students at Wilshire Park School. After distributing fire safety materials and judging the posters , we provided a ride home in the fire truck for the twelve winners . This program was so successful , we plan to make it an annual event in the future. In addition, St . Anthony also participated in the National Fire Prevention poster contest. Our winner in 1982 was Andrea Westergard. Andrea lives at 3131 McKinley Street and is a fifth grader at St. Charles . EMS MEDICAL ACTIVITIES One of the priorities in our EMS system is the education of St. Anthony ' s citizens in first aid and CPR. Statistics indicate that we are achieving a degree of success in this area as the number of students has been increasing over the last few years. The main factor in the Nigh number of first aid students is our involvement in the high school program to train all 8th and 10th grades in first aid and CPR. Included in our first aid training for 1983 will be • the certification of our maintenance personnel in standard first aid. It ' s been five years since they were last trained in this area . A few members have maintained their certification . Another successful program we offer is our free blood pressure service . During 1982 we took 597 blood pressures for the citizens in this area . In many cases we discovered problems that otheniise would have gone undetected . In Julv , 1982 , we began using an improved medical/resuce form. This form will help us to gather data and statistics to better identify needs in training and equipment. In September, 1982 , the St. Anthony Fire Department was chosen to participate in a study to determine the effectiveness of an automatic external defibrillator/pacemaker in cardiac arrests . As of this time , the results of this study are inconclusive , but 1983 should provide considerably more data. This unit was placed in St. Anthony because we were considered by one of the authorities in medicine as having a highly qualified EMS group and an operation that was able to provide data on this research project.
