Public Information on City Parks Meeting Minutes
June 2, 1997
Page 4 •
Warren Rolek, Superintendent of Schools, stated he was present this evening as a resource
person. He indicated he was anxious to have the tennis courts and play lot reinstalled and that
he wanted to work with the City and community to make Central Park the best it could be.
Gary Palm, Athletic Director of St. Anthony Schools, stated he was concerned that the
number of tennis courts and ballfields not be reduced. He explained that if the high school
has home baseball and softball games, they require all four fields. He noted the ideal number
of tennis courts for the physical education classes of 28 children is seven courts. He accepted
the replacement of the six courts but requested that this number not be reduced.
Mayor Ranallo stated the consensus of the Council was that the six tennis courts which were
removed would be replaced with six tennis courts.
i
Mr. Palm stated he realized Alternative C was a lot more expensive but he would prefer it
over the other alternatives and felt it was the best plan from a safety standpoint.
Carol Jindra, 3001 Hilldale Avenue NE, stated she had been a resident of St. Anthony her
entire life: She suggested the hazardous equipment such as the slide at Silver Point Park be
removed. She presented illustrations from firms being investigated by the City of New
Brighton, who is also upgrading their park equipment. She noted this equipment had a total
cost of$25,000, provided activities for children ages three to six and six to twelve, and could '
be installed by residents with the guidance of a supervisor. She stated that the City of New
Brighton maintains their parks once per month and suggested the City of St. Anthony do the
same.
Mayor Ranallo urged residents to contact City Hall and report damaged equipment. If they
do not receive results, he urged them to contact Councilmembers directly.
Councilmember Enrooth noted there is a large amount of vandalism in the City, especially in
the bathrooms and related areas.
Councilmember Faust suggested the City needs to be proactive. If equipment breaks and is
not repaired, it shows that the City does not care.
Councilmember Wagner noted the vandalism has gotten so bad that at some parks the toilets
have had to be locked.
Jay Molter, 3500 Belden Drive, asked if the tennis courts would be lighted and suggested
more drinking fountains be installed. He questioned if the top of the hill would be a better
location for the basketball court and would help to deter vandalism as the children would be
more visible. He expressed concern for the trees which are located in front of the old City
Hall building.
Mr. Kost noted the tennis courts were being located as close to the parking lot as possible in
an effort to retain the trees.
