Public Information on City Parks Meeting Minutes
June 2, 1997 -
Page 6
Karen Johnson, 2813 Coolidge, stated she lives closer to Silver Point Park. She noted there is
a lot of'talent in the residents of the community to do research and grant writing. The
residents feel parks are a priority and would be willing to lend their expertise. She asked that
the parks be considered as a multi-'generational gathering place, a place to bring the
community together. She noted vandalism happens when there are not responsible adults in
the area. She felt the vandalism would be reduced if the parks were accessible to young
adults and senior citizens. She asked the City to better maintain the current facilities.
I
Robin Rovick, 3000 Croft Drive, noted there was talk of life-cycle housing and she hoped
there would also be a life-cycle park system which would be friendly to all generations. She
encouraged the use of trees, shrubs, and flowers. She noted that it was her understanding that
the City has performed these maintenance items over and over. She stated the play area needs
to be open to the public and noted how important it is for the children to play together. She
suggested there be handicap access to the ballfields and expressed her preference for
Alternative A2.
Rod Bloom, 3506 Skycroft Drive, stated he is a Sports Boosters coach. He stated the
community is in need of playgrounds for young children and he was positive that the
community could install the equipment. He asked that the bathrooms at the sports complex
be left open. He expressed his appreciation for the upgrades of the ballfields in the last two
years.
Chris Gulachek, 3508 Belden Drive, stated she felt the improvements should meet the needs
of everyone from the young to the old. She asked that more benches be provided and noted
she would like to see a larger play area installed. She expressed approval of the suggestions
for handicap equipment, litter and recycling containers. She reiterated the bathroom concerns
and requested more signage be utilized.
Mayor Ranallo stated the three things he saw as necessary included: 1. Maintenance of what
the City currently has; 2. A short-term plan; and 3. A long-range plan. He recommended an
ad hoc commission be formed to get more input and determine a final plan and how it will be
funded.
Marilyn Eberlein, 3524 Skycroft Drive, reported that the staff at Nativity is waiting to see
what the City has planned. If a play area is opened and is available, it will be used. She also
noted that the children who do the vandalism are our children and are our responsibility.
Mr. Kost commended the audience for their ideas and input. He stated he was in support of
St. Anthony forming a park commission.
Councilmember Wagner stated he was pleased with the attendance and felt this was a
worthwhile meeting. He felt the solution was to obtain funds to fix the parks for the short-
term and to develop a long-term plan for redevelopment of the parks. 16
