Council Meeting
May 22, 1990
page 6
•
information presented was worthwhile and could be adapted to accommodate
interests and needs of municipalities . Councilmember Makowske stated
that the speaker charged $2,500 for this one day seminar , but if one of
his associates conducted the seminar, it would be less expensive. Council -
s member Makowske's registration fee was paid by the Youth Service Bureau.
She will make the written material and her notes from the seminar available
to the Councilmembers and staff.

The City Manager will contact some of the surrounding communities to see
if any of their staff would be interested in attending this type of
seminar. It was felt if enough cities participated in a cooperative
effort it would be affordable. Mayor Ranallo stated there are funds
budgeted for conferences and requested the City Manager to pursue setting
this type of seminar up.

Councilmember Marks had nothing to report at this time.

Mayor Ranallo advised he had been requested to chair the League of
Minnesota Cities ' Federal Legislation Committee and had accepted. This
would involve four meetings each year and a presentation of the Com-
mittee' s policy recommendations at the League' s Annual Meeting.

The Mayor and the City Manager attended the Association of Metropolitan
• 24 Municipalities meeting on Wednesday, May 9th. This organization's dues
will increase about twenty-five percent for the coming year. The Mayor
advised that the AMM is planning on enhancing their lobbying efforts in
the Legislature.

Mayor Ranallo requested that the appointment of a Mayor Pro-tem be
included in the agenda of the next City Council meeting. He also observed
that Tom Burt has served as City Manager for six months and his perfor-
mance review should be done at the next Council meeting.

The City Manager has received applications from two residents interested
in being appointed to serve on the City Council . Some Councilmembers
noted that other residents have also expressed their interest to them.

Mayor Ranallo reminded the Council he had requested each of them to
formulate four or five questions to ask each applicant and submit them
to the City Manager.

C. City Manager

The City Manager agreed to serve on the Association of Metropolitan
Municipalities ' State Legislative and Personnel Committee which involves
about three meetings a year. He felt the speech given by the AMM President,
Larry Bakken , Councilmember from Golden Valley, was very good and focused
on the future of the AMM.

1 .
