300.05 Probationary Period . <br /> Subd. 1. Purvose. A probation period shall be required of <br /> any person assigned or undertaking substantially new position <br /> duties and responsibilities as the result of an original <br /> appointment, promotion or transfer. The probation period is <br /> an integral part of the selection process and shall be <br /> utilized for observing the employee' s work, for securing the <br /> most effective adjustment of the employee to the position and <br /> for rejecting any employee whose performance does not meet the <br /> required work standards. <br /> Subd. 2 . Duration. Every original appointment and every <br /> promotional appointment is subject to a probationary period of <br /> six months after appointment and an extension thereof when <br /> necessary, except, that the probationary period for police <br /> officers shall be twelve (12) full calendar months of service. <br /> Subd. 3 . Termination. The City Manager may terminate a <br /> probationary employee any time during the probationary period <br /> if, in the City Manager' s opinion, the working test indicates <br /> that the employee is unable or unwilling to perform the duties <br /> of the position satisfactorily. The employee so terminated <br /> will be notified in writing of the reasons for the termination <br /> and will not have the right to appeal unless he or she is a <br /> veteran, in which case the procedure prescribed in Minn. Stat. <br /> 5 197 .46 shall be followed. <br /> A full-tine employee terminated during the probationary period <br /> from a position to which he or she has been promoted or <br /> transferred will be reinstated to a position in the class from <br /> which he or she was promoted or transferred when such position <br /> is available unless he or she is discharged from the City <br /> service. <br /> Subd. 4 . Completion. Immediately prior to the expiration <br /> of the probationary period, the Department Head will notify <br /> the city Manager in writing whether or not the services of the <br /> employee have been satisfactory and will make a recom-mendation <br /> as to whether or not the employment should be continued. If <br /> employment is continued, the employee will become a full-time <br /> employee at the end of the probationary period. <br /> Subd. 5. Leave Benefits. During the initial probation <br /> period, but not during a promotional probation period, <br /> employees will not be entitled to the use of sick leave or <br /> vacation leave during the first six months 'of service. After <br /> six months of service, employees will be entitled to the use <br /> of sick leave and vacation leave. Sick leave and vacation <br /> leave will be accrued from the start of the probationary <br /> employment. <br /> 3-3 <br />
