•1 No. Thorson reported she and her husband, Tom, would be co-chairing the 2 July event along with Rick Lundeen and his wife. She said her purpose 3 in coming that night was to stress the need for open communication 4 between the VillageFest Committee and the Council, particularly when it 5 came to the proposed Village float. The Committee had voted last week 6 to have the float professionally built. This would avoid the problems 7 involved in getting the float to the parades, insuring and storing it 8 and depending on the Public Works Department to construct the trailer, 9 etc. 10 Ms. Thorson said her group would be more than happy for the Council to 11 take full responsibility for building the float, but if that wasn't 12 going to happen, the committee intended to start an intensive fund 13 raising effort to cover the costs of between $5,000 and $7,500 to have 14 a private individual build, store and transport the float for one year. 15 Mayor Sundland told her that what the Council had discussed at their 16 January 24th and February 14th meetings was having the Public Works 17 Department involvement as well as insurance and storage costs assumed 18 by the City as its contribution towards the project. 19 Councilmember Enrooth, who was out of town that evening, had been given 20 the responsibility of ascertaining just what that contribution would be 21 at the February 14th meeting and his report was not available for the 22 Council to act on that evening. However, the Mayor indicated he did �3 know there had been some questions raised by the City's insurance 4 provider which indicated the City might be facing payment of a large 25 deductible if the float was covered under the City's umbrella liability 26 policy. 27 Ms. Thorson indicated the $2,500 Tri City American Legion donation 28 should adequately cover the start up costs for the VillageFest itself 29 and the committee was quite hopeful that they would be able to solicit 30 the necessary funds to cover the costs of having the float built. She 31 then related all the solicitation efforts they intended to pursue and 32 was advised about the follow ups the Councilmembers perceived would be 33 necessary to the proposed letters to area businesses. The promotion 34 package seeking donations from the residents, which the committee hopes 35 to have included with the City's Spring Newsletter, was then discussed 36 with Ms. Thorson and Ms. VanderHeyden. 37 The VillageFest Co-Chair then reported on all the activities which had 38 been lined up for the community event, adding to those events the 39 Council had already heard about, the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and the 40 National Jr. Karate Championship event, which is planned to be held the 41 same weekend in the high school which should draw at least a thousand 42 people to the area at the same time that the Fest is in progress. Ms. 43 Thorson told the Council the committee is very appreciative of the 44 cooperation the City's Fire, Police, and Public Works Departments have 45 shown, which she reported in detail. • 7
