City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
January 11, 2000
Page 10
1
Morrison affirmed that there had been a previous concern about zoning issues regarding the
2 Apache project and, in that respect, he had attached the Commercial Zoning Ordinance to the
3 memo of January 10, 2000 for the Council's review and information.
4 Horst expressed disappointment that it appeared that any retail options had been discarded and he
5 questioned the reasons for retail being an unpopular option.
6 Morrison reaffirmed that a retail option was not entirely discarded and that Mr. Tankenoff had
7 previously stated that some type of retail component could be a feasible option. In essence; Mr.
8 Tankenoff had felt that if an office building was designed, that the building would have a retail
9 overcast such as a coffee shop or other feature. Mornson clarified that one of the problems with
10 attracting and supporting retail is that the property's location is inconvenient to corresponding
11 highways.
12 Horst affirmed that he would continue to support a form of retail business at this point in time.
13 Cavanaugh expressed his belief that, unfortunately, the property has proven itself to be mostly in-
14 compatible to successful retail. However, he stated that Hillcrest Development believed that a
compromise between office space and retail establishments would be a viable option. Although
06 Cavanaugh stated he has not discarded the option of retail completely, he is enthusiastic about
17 the visions of Hillcrest Development and anxious to pursue this matter further.
18 Thuesen agreed that Hillcrest Development is providing encouraging options compared to
19 options that had been considered in the past.
20 Morrison affirmed that Mr. Tankenoff has discussed a vision and is searching for direction from
21 the City.
22 On another issue, Morrison reported that the City sponsors an employee luncheon for employees
23 with five, ten, 15, 20 etc. years of service and those employees are acknowledged and receive
24 awards. Morrison suggested either March 1 or March 2 as a possible luncheon date and
25 suggested that the Councilmembers review their calendars.
26 Morrison stated that the goal setting retreat had been arranged for February 11 and February 18*at
27 the Sheraton.
28 On another issue, Morrison reported that during the second or fourth week of April, the City
29 recognizes volunteers. Cavanaugh suggested that Morrison provide a suggested date at the next
30 Council meeting and that the City Staff plan a theme and provide a list of volunteers.
•1
