1 Mayor Sundland indicated he expected the state legislature to pay <br /> 2 serious attention to this new concept and said he thought it would be <br /> 0 helpful for the Council to be briefed on the proposed legislation. <br /> 4 Councilmember Makowske Lets State Senator Marty Know Her Concerns <br /> 5 Related to the Ethics Bill He Has Authored <br /> 6 The Councilmember indicated she hoped she hadn't been "too hard" on the <br /> 7 legislator in the letter she had written to him on the issue, copies of <br /> 8 which she had sent to all the Councilmembers. Councilmember Ranallo <br /> 9 commented that at least Senator Marty would now be conscious of the fact <br /> 10 that there are women serving in local governments which his legislation <br /> 11 might have overlooked. Councilmember Marks indicated he agreed that the <br /> 12 legislation could "work a real hardship on local officials who are not <br /> 13 as financially well off as corporate executives might be. " <br /> 14 Councilmember Makowske said she had drawn Senator Marty's attention to <br /> 15 the fact that there is quite a bit of difference between city officials <br /> 16 like those on the St. Anthony Council, who are "practically volunteers" <br /> 17 when it comes to compensation and people who are working full time in <br /> 18 state or county government. " She indicated she didn't perceive the <br /> 19 across-the-board treatment of all types of government officials was <br /> 20 well thought out in the proposed legislation. <br /> 21 Councilmember Makowske Hears Some Surprising Projections and Comments <br /> 22 During Metro Council Meeting, February 22nd <br /> 23 The Councilmember reported she had found the Metro Council State of the <br /> Region event very informative because some surprising conclusions had <br /> been promoted through the theme "Shaping Change, Preparing the Twin <br /> 26 Cities for the Twenty-First Century" . She said one of the most <br /> 27 startling comments to her had been made by DFL State Senator John Brandl <br /> 28 who has always had the backing of the Minnesota Educational Association. <br /> 29 During Senator Brandl's -report, he conceded that "pouring more money <br /> 30 into the state's educational system might not necessarily cure its <br /> 31 ailments at all. " The Councilmember indicated she had brought back from <br /> 32 the meeting a whole packet of information, including her personal <br /> 33 observations, which she would be sending around to the other <br /> 34 Councilmembers. <br /> 35 Councilmember Makowske Pleased with St. Anthony Historical Society <br /> 36 Progress <br /> 37 Dave Nystluen, Field Director for the Minnesota Historical Society had <br /> 38 addressed the St. Anthony Historical Committee the previous evening, <br /> 39 Councilmember Makowske reported. Mr. Nystluen had made them aware of <br /> 40 the fact that federal legislation passed last August would require the <br /> 41 Committee to pay $300.00 to have a 501 C3 account, which would enable <br /> 42 the Society to accept donations. The Councilmember indicated Mr. <br /> 43 Nystluen showed them how to put a historical book together and Ruth <br /> 44 Harris had brought a copy of the Hopkins history with her as an example <br /> 45 of what could be done. The Society is having some of the oral histories <br /> 46 they have taken transcribed at a cost of $55.00 per history. <br /> • 5 <br />
