Planning Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
August 16, 1994
Page 12
VI. GROUND SIGNS.
In his staff report, City Manager Momson informed those present that staff is suggesting
changes to the City's ordinance relating to height and copy surface of ground signs.
The Commission discussed previous sign variance considerations and how this will
impact multiple tenant buildings.
Commissioner Franzese indicated her preference for monument signs versus pylon signs
and that it was unfortunate the City cannot accommodate the C.M. Group signage needs
with a monument sign.
City Manager Morrison explained that since the Zoning Ordinance is involved, this type
of amendment will require a public hearing and suggested the Commission schedule one
for their September meeting.
A discussion ensued regarding signage for churches located in a residential area.
Commissioner Makowske suggested the amendment be revised regarding churches to
indicate "except R-1, RIA and R2". Chair Gondorchin preferred to not make this change
in case a residential development wants to erect a ground sign. He noted that the variance
procedure could be used. Commissioner Bergstrom agreed. Commissioner Horst noted
this would add new language to restrict and may result in liability.
Following further discussion, the majority of Commissioners indicated a preference for
deleting the additional language.
Consensus was reached to direct staff to schedule a public hearing on zoning ordinance
amendment relating to ground signs at the September 20, 1994 meeting.
VII.
