REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING <br /> FEBRUARY 23 , 1993 <br /> 3 PAGE 7 <br /> 4 <br /> 5 <br /> 6 <br /> 7 Councilmember Wagner recalled that the City Attorney had <br /> 8 discouraged approval of amortization when it was <br /> 9 previously discussed by - the City Council . <br /> 10 <br /> 11 Two signs which have received considerable discussion are <br /> 12 those of Dairy Queen and Happy ' s Potato Chips . <br /> 13 <br /> 14 The City Manager feels the new sign ordinance will <br /> 15 address signs not in compliance with the Comprehensive <br /> 16 Sign Plan. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 The Mayor inquired what the problem is with the Happy' s <br /> 19 sign . The City Manager responded it has been in place <br /> 20 since 1968 and has always been well-maintained . <br /> 21 Councilmember Marks noted it did not comply but was <br /> 22 grandfathered in . <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Mayor Ranallo felt there could be considerable problems <br /> 25 resulting from requesting this business to take their <br /> 6 sign down after being in place for twenty-five years . He <br /> also noted that this sign may comply as there are no <br /> 8 actual sales, made out of the building. The signs are <br /> 29 directional and informational . <br /> 30 <br /> 31 The City Manager advised that these types of signs , <br /> 32 directional and informational , are not defined in the <br /> 33 sign ordinance nor are these types of signs controlled. <br /> 34 <br /> 35 Most signs are controlled as to shape, size, and height , <br /> 36 but signs which contain menu lists , hours , gas pump <br /> 37 directions , etc . are not defined in the sign ordinance . <br /> 38 <br /> 39 The Mayor felt some thought should be given as to what <br /> 40 would most benefit the business community . He observed <br /> 41 that some of. the commercial and business areas in the <br /> 42 City could use some help . He does not support <br /> 43 amortization . <br /> 44 <br /> 45 The City Manager advised that the Planning Commission <br /> 46 will not hold a public hearing if there is no interest <br /> 47 from the City Council regarding amortization . <br /> 48 <br /> 49 <br /> 50 <br />
