REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING FEBRUARY 23 , 1993 3 PAGE 7 4 5 6 7 Councilmember Wagner recalled that the City Attorney had 8 discouraged approval of amortization when it was 9 previously discussed by - the City Council . 10 11 Two signs which have received considerable discussion are 12 those of Dairy Queen and Happy ' s Potato Chips . 13 14 The City Manager feels the new sign ordinance will 15 address signs not in compliance with the Comprehensive 16 Sign Plan. 17 18 The Mayor inquired what the problem is with the Happy' s 19 sign . The City Manager responded it has been in place 20 since 1968 and has always been well-maintained . 21 Councilmember Marks noted it did not comply but was 22 grandfathered in . 23 24 Mayor Ranallo felt there could be considerable problems 25 resulting from requesting this business to take their 6 sign down after being in place for twenty-five years . He also noted that this sign may comply as there are no 8 actual sales, made out of the building. The signs are 29 directional and informational . 30 31 The City Manager advised that these types of signs , 32 directional and informational , are not defined in the 33 sign ordinance nor are these types of signs controlled. 34 35 Most signs are controlled as to shape, size, and height , 36 but signs which contain menu lists , hours , gas pump 37 directions , etc . are not defined in the sign ordinance . 38 39 The Mayor felt some thought should be given as to what 40 would most benefit the business community . He observed 41 that some of. the commercial and business areas in the 42 City could use some help . He does not support 43 amortization . 44 45 The City Manager advised that the Planning Commission 46 will not hold a public hearing if there is no interest 47 from the City Council regarding amortization . 48 49 50
