2015 Annual Report • Police Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota <br /> <br /> <br />24 | Page <br /> <br /> <br />Officer Jeronimo Yanez volunteered with the Cinco De <br />Mayo Celebration in St. Paul. He participated in the <br />parade with other members of the National Latino Police <br />Officers Association. Officers from six different police <br />agencies displayed squad cars and interacted with families <br />during this event. <br /> <br />Officer Jim South provided a tour of the police department to a group from the St. Anthony <br />Kiwanis. <br /> <br />June, Officer Jim South met with a neighborhood group at the Cottages of Silver Lake Village. <br />General crime prevention topics were discussed. <br /> <br />On June 17th and 18th The St. <br />Anthony Police department, <br />along with the St. Anthony <br />Fire Department, hosted the <br />5th annual Summer Survival <br />School. Summer Survival <br />School is a safety camp for <br />incoming 4th graders in the St. <br />Anthony, Falcon Heights and <br />Lauderdale communities. This <br />year 52 children were given <br />the opportunity to learn about <br />many topics involving safety <br />and were able to have hands <br />on experience with many <br />aspects of the law enforcement <br />and first responder <br />profession. Over the two days children learned about the 911 dispatch system, household <br />chemicals, electrical safety, severe weather awareness, physical fitness awareness, firearms <br />safety, dangerous drugs, dangerous dogs, bike safety and water safety. Children were also <br />given the opportunity to meet members of the East Metro SWAT team and learn what they do <br />and see their equipment. They had the opportunity to learn to use fire extinguishers, to climb <br />on fire trucks and use a fire hose in an obstacle course, and how to administer CPR and basic <br />first aid. The State Patrol Helicopter paid a visit and the kids were also given the opportunity to <br />watch a K-9 demonstration. Children received a brand new bike helmet courtesy of the St. <br />Anthony Kiwanis and a graduation certificate, with t-shirt. The Police and Fire Departments <br />look forward to continuing the program in the summer of 2016. <br />
