VI. Training
2014 Annual Report · Fire Department · St. Anthony Village, Minnesota
11
MINNESOTA BOARD OF FIREFIGHTER
TRAINING AND EDUCATION
The Minnesota Board of Firefi ghter Training and Education grant from 2013-2014 was fully utilized this past year,
and additional monies were applied for ($2560).
ROOKIE TRAINING
The time line for our rookie program encompasses about 18 months from the onset of training to being sworn
in as a Fire Fighter. A new class of recruits began their training in January 2014. The class started with 9
and we are now down to 7. We are utilizing the state sponsored training through Hennepin Technical College
to complete their Firefi ghter One and Two along with HAZMAT Operations. All but one has completed EMT
Training. The next step is driving and pumping. We expect to fi nish this class in the early fall. Normally we
would start a new class in 2016 but our current numbers may push that out at least a year.
OUT OF DEPARTMENT TRAINING
The Fire Marshal is responsible for the Fire Prevention and Public
Education programs. These programs consist of community fi re
prevention education, fi re prevention education in the schools,
fi re prevention education for businesses, and the fi re safety
poster contest and fi re station tours, among other items.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
In 2014, the Fire Department continued community outreach
training with CPR in the High School to all the 9th graders and
did classes for many other groups within the City. This training
is provided at no cost and the instructors volunteer their time. In
addition to CPR training the Fire Department also put together a
“File of Life” program that we will be implementing in 2015. This
program is designed to help answer necessary medical questions
when a patient is unable to speak. This is a form that is fi lled out
and kept in a magnetic envelope for fi rst responders to grab easily
and refer to. This program is designed for residents of the City of
St. Anthony and will be rolled out in early 2015.
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK AND OPEN
HOUSE
Fire Prevention Week allows the Fire Department to have personal
interaction with 3rd grade students at Wilshire Park Elementary
and St. Charles Borromeo schools. All 3rd graders are given a
safety presentation in the North Suburban Fire Safety House.
Along with that training we also hold our annual Fire Department
Open House. In 2014, we had over 500 people attend (over
300 in 2013) and received safety messages. The Open House
provides an opportunity to answer direct questions as well as
gain valuable experience of interacting directly with citizens.
