2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

26 | Page

Whether it be through a free blood pressure check at the station, a station tour, our Fire
Department Open House during fire prevention week, or even having the crew on duty read a
children’s book at the community center for Halloween! We want to interact with the public in
times of non-emergency situations. We have a few programs in place that can allow us to
interact, help to improve safety, and enrich the lives of the residents. These programs make an
emergent situation go a little smoother for those involved, or can help to keep an incident from
escalating through advanced warning and knowledge. A few of our community outreach
programs include Fire Station Tours, the File of Life Program, Home Safety Surveys, instructing
CPR courses at the fire station, and also to all 9th grade Health classes at the High School each
year. Training community members in CPR helps our community continue to improve itself as
a Heart Safe Community as designated by the Minnesota Department of Health and The
American Heart Association.
FIRE STATION TOURS
One of the brightest moments that can happen
during our 24 hour shift as firefighters is when we
get a visit by children or a group of children who
would like a tour of the Fire Station. To see the
expressions on their faces when we lead them out
onto the apparatus floor to see the fire trucks is
priceless! The expressions of awe, the “Wow’s” and
the “Cool’s” never fail to bring a smile to our faces.
We can set up guided tours and give young ones of
all ages the chance to see a fire truck up close. It is
not only the hands on with the trucks, but it also gives us a chance to show them our
firefighting gear we wear. Seeing a firefighter all geared up with helmet and face mask can be
pretty intimidating for some children. Giving them a chance to see the gear and know that it is
still just us underneath, can sometime alleviate these anxieties before they develop. They may
even have the opportunity to try on some gear if the group is not too large. A tour of the fire
station can not only be a fun experience, but also one where children can learn a thing or two
about fire safety. We field all kinds of questions that kids may have been longing to have
answered, this is their opportunity to ask!
