2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

34 | Page

VIII. Emergency Management
A focus of 2017 was the Super Bowl and the side effects to everyday life that are caused by it.
One of the major issues caused by the “big game” were the availability of hotel rooms or lack
thereof. Many times when there is a structure fire, residents of the damaged structure typically
partner up with the Red Cross and will stay in a hotel for an extended period. With no rooms
available within a reasonable distance of the metro, the plan was to setup a shelter for those that
would need it potentially.
As a member of the North Suburban Emergency Management Planning Group, we held a full
scale exercise of setting up a shelter with 50 beds. The scenario was an apartment fire with 50
residents needing a place to stay for an extended period. This shelter needed to provide food,
bathroom and shower facilities, animal sheltering, language interpreters, pharmacy capabilities
and mental health counselors. We had actors come in and bring their pets, health ailments,
language barriers, ADA requirements and various other real life needs that we could think of.
Emergency Management is about planning and preparation and this exercise was one that
provided us with a great opportunity to see what our capabilities were and where we needed to
expand them.
