2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

19 | P a g e

is over 160 hours. Then there is all of the other training that must be completed in between on
top of monthly meetings and drills.
o Firefighter training consists of some of the following.
o History of the fire service
o Personal protective equipment
o Fire behavior
o Tools and equipment
o Search and rescue
o Ropes and knots
o Firefighter rehab
o Building construction
o Incident command
o Fire suppression
o Hazmat
o Pre incident planning
o Vehicle extrication
We also require all of our members to be Fire Equipment Operators (FEO’s). This training varies
in time as some individuals catch on faster than others. Each candidate learns to drive each of
the fire trucks, how to pump with each of them and all of the equipment that is on them.
Everyone needs to know all of our dash panels on each vehicle along with all of the pump
panels. Driving usually can be the toughest for some because of the sheer size of our vehicles
and the overwhelming effect pumping can have on people. That is why we train so often and
we continuously train on it over and over again. Practice makes perfect and even then we can
always better ourselves.
Throughout the training process there are several milestones we have. Once training is started
firefighters begin to learn our equipment. They complete our equipment location test and are
given a fire pager so they can now respond to calls. At the end of training they are given a new
helmet with their badge number on it. They earn that helmet with all their hard work and can
finally get rid of their yellow rookie helmet. Believe me that yellow helmet really makes you
stand out in a crowd. They are then sworn in as firefighters and can look forward to a long
career with St. Anthony Fire.
