Fire Prevention and Education <br />By Lieutenant Mattie Jaros <br />2018 was again, another very busy year for us on the fire prevention and education <br />side of the department. This past year a total of 2,556 people received some sort of <br />safety lesson from us at the fire department. Safety messages include anything from <br />CPR classes, station tours, to education in the classrooms. <br />A few years ago, we developed an education plan that would allow us to visit each <br />grade with a focus on age-appropriate fire prevention education. Our main <br />objective was to develop a learning plan that would piggyback what the classes learned the <br />previous year. The program is laid out in a way that we have set learning plans developed for <br />each grade. Throughout the years we have adjusted and learned what has worked and what has <br />not. Each year is a learning experience for both us and the students. <br />We started with visiting the <br />Kindergarteners twice. The initial visit <br />being at their school’s first fire drill. <br />We took this opportunity to talk about <br />why fire drills are important and <br />walked through the safe way to <br />conduct them. In February, we visited <br />the classrooms a second time during “I <br />Love to read month”, We utilize this <br />time to read to the children a book <br />about fire safety and start a discussion <br />on fire safety topics relevant to their <br />age. <br /> <br />In first grade, we spent time discussing smoke alarms, dialing 911 and put on our fire gear for <br />them to see. This educational session teaches the 1st graders where smoke alarms are located in <br />their home, why they are important and what to do if their fire alarm goes off. We created a
