As was previously discussed <br />learning moments for us, something that we have learned is that most homes do not have <br />“land-lines” when we teach this portion, many children do not know how to operate a land-line <br />phone. Building into that we started to discuss cell-phone use and calling 911. This was a take- <br />away for us as teachers that we needed to address and adjust in our program. <br />We took things a step further with the Second graders, we created a home escape plan. We <br />visited classrooms and set-up a board with an overview of a home. A few students volunteered <br />to show the 2 ways out of the bedroom from the home and where their meeting place would be <br />on the white board. They were sent home with the paperwork and supplies to do the same <br />project with their family. This allowed the conversation of fire safety to trickle back into the <br />home where parents and sibling could participate. We came back a week later with “approval” <br />stamps to mark the students work and congratulate them on their completed plans. <br />The Safe Escape house was the Third graders learning experience. They took what they learned <br />the year before, creating safe escape plans and put them into action. We brought the safe escape <br />house to the schools. Each group of students got to travel room to room to discuss the home <br />hazards and how to prevent fires from happening. In the final room, a bedroom, they got to <br />practice what they would do if there was a fire in their home. We used theatrical smoke and set <br />off a smoke alarm and students had to safely exit the home and get to their “meeting spot” and <br />verify everyone was out safely. <br />In Fourth Grade, we expanded on the fire <br />prevention program and started teaching <br />them the science behind fire. We taught them <br />the chemistry behind what fire actually is <br />and discussed ways to put the fire out. <br />Keeping on with fire prevention history, the <br />5th graders participated in the MN State Fire <br />Marshal’s Poster Contest. In this contest, <br />students were given the fire prevention <br />month theme: “Look, Listen, Learn: Fire Can <br />Happen Anywhere” and asked to draw a poster that had that theme attached. 4 finalists were
