Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
November 8, 1999
Page 5
1 Marks inquired if additional seeding would be done for Central Park. Mr. Hartman said the
2 seeding would probably be done next year, but could possibly be accomplished this year if the
3 warm fall weather continues.
4 Jindra felt that the Commission needed to arrive at an estimate about certain phases of work to be
5 accomplished for Central Park, as well as obtain direction from the City Council about
6 budgeting. Marks offered that once the newly elected City Council takes over, there would be a
7 strategic planning committee in place and a plan would result.
8 Jindra suggested that the Commission review the preliminary drawings and begin a decision -
9 making process. She also suggested obtaining information from the public. Marks suggested
10 detailing a plan to present to the new City Council Liaison after the first of the year.
11 Jindra felt that Sports Boosters would be able to coordinate with other communities about
12 borrowing fields since St. Anthony's fields would be closed for a time period. Jensen stated that
13 a precise timeframe needed to be in place before he would be able to arrange for alternate fields.
14 Marks mentioned the possibility of obtaining some land from Silver Lake Camp, and suggested
15 that other opportunities could arise. In this respect, he suggested that the Commission develop a
16 vision and present the vision to the new City Council Liaison.
17 Marks also mentioned that Heart of the Earth School is interested in working with the City and
18 there could be a possibility in that respect of obtaining some land for fields.
19 Jindra stated that she had talked with the Parks Director of Roseville about using some of their
20 land for soccer fields and other activities such as baseball. Jensen questioned if Roseville would
21 be interested in leasing land. He offered that parks are typically being utilized from the end of
22 April through October.
23 Wagner suggested the Unisys and Apache property as possible options. Jensen responded that
24 the Apache opportunity has dwindled. Marks suggested the National Sports Center, but it was
25 determined that the cost and liability of bussing the children to the Center would be complicated.
26 Jensen asked if the Commission would be interested in approaching the City Council about pur-
27 chasing land for fields. Marks responded that the Council would be interested in reviewing this
28 matter with the Commission, but that the money for parks comes from a different budget and is
29 sometimes difficult to justify certain purchases. Jensen mentioned that he continues to see un -
30 derutilized land and questioned if additional park space was out of the question for St. Anthony.
31 Wolff suggested that a joint meeting be held with the City Council and the Commission. Jindra
32 agreed with Wolff s suggestion. Koehntop supported Jensen's comment about striving to
1 '3 achieve more land for park use.
