Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
December 11, 2000
Page 2
Hartman noted without focusing on the funding issue, he hopes to increase the creativity of the
Commission for the pavilion concepts and components.
Jindra indicated she would be in favor of a covered area within with park near the
concession/pavilion structure for shelter from the sun and picnicking area.
John Druger, Sadness Construction, addressed the Commission with several drawings he
designed for the Commission. He indicated he would needed additional information from the
Commission before a completed sketch could be before the Commission.
Skrivseth indicated during the summer, community services has a children's program within the
shelter for six weeks to house a kids club. She stated the revamped shelter would need to still
house this event.
Jindra reviewed a picture of a pavilion in the City of New Brighton with the Commissioners.
She noted New Brighton had just completed five shelters throughout their parks with warming
houses and activity rooms with exterior patios. Jindra asked that the Commission members visit
this site to gain ideas for the intent of the building.
Zurbey indicated the New Brighton building was impressive and had senior activities available in
the meeting room. He indicated he would be in favor of offering these same services for St.
Anthony seniors. The Commission concurred.
Jensen asked if there was a constraint on renovating the current building. Jindra indicated the
Commission currently has $100,000 at this time.
Mr. Hartman cautioned the Commission about focusing on the price tag at this time because the
Commission should be addressing the components needed at this time and not the financial
issues. He asked that the Commission prioritize the items needed at the concession stand and
shelter/warming house.
Mr. Hartman stated the concession stand would essentially consist of restrooms and a concession
stand. The Commission concurred. Hartman asked if the Commission would like to have a
subcommittee to address the components of the shelter structure.
Jindra indicated the subcommittee would not be necessary and suggested several components for
the shelter as being: four restrooms — two male/two female, a storage room, a warming
house/meeting area and an outdoor a picnic area.
Gebhardt indicated she felt the grading in this area could be a concern for handicap accessibility
and the potential use by seniors within the shelter. Mr. Hartman indicated this would have to be
addressed.
