Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
November 13, 2000
Page 5
1 City Council Liaison Thuesen stated it was brought to his attention that one of the youth came
2 into the building, entered a classroom, and asked who could tum on the lights. He stated the
3 suggestions made by the police officer would help resolve some of those concerns.
4 Gebhardt stated she has been asked three times for money to use the telephone.
5 Jenson noted the shelter has an available sewer system connection so it may not be too difficult
6 to meet ADA requirements. Mr. Hartman estimated a cost of $50,000 to install two single
7 bathrooms where the satellite bathrooms are now located.
8 Mr. Hartman noted that satellite bathrooms are accessible to the skate board park. He explained
9 that the back door to the Community Center is a police access and others are to enter the
10 Community Center via the front door.
1 t Jindra thanked Mr. Kost for his presentation. It was noted that at the December 11, 2000
12 meeting, the Skycroft neighborhood will be invited to provide input at 6:30 p.m. on the entrance,
13 Maplewood extension, and lighting. The new concept designs will be presented at 7:00 p.m.
I V. DISCUS SILVER POINT PARK SKATING ACTIVITIES.
15 Gebhardt requested clarification on the type of hockey boards that are being installed (temporary
16 versus permanent). Mr. Hartman explained that the permanent boards will not interfere with ball
17 games.
18 Zurbey stated he believes the boards will impact ball games since the boards are being placed in
19 a "C" shape. He stated the boards should not be sticking out north/south or east/west. Mr.
20 Hartman stated the residents were promised there would be recreational skating and hockey this
21 year. He stated he will check with Todd Hubmer about the board placement.
22 Jenson asked why the configuration used at Emerald Park could not be replicated. Mr. Hartman
23 stated it was desired to keep the radius intact since the boards would be permanent.
24 In response to Jindra, Mr. Hartman stated the boards are higher than at Emerald Park to make up
25 the elevation difference.
26 Jindra stated the players bench fence at Emerald Park is higher (5.5 feet) than the fence at the
27 varsity field (4.5 feet). She also noted the backstop does not contain a hood to stop foul balls and
28 there is now a reduced number of landscape plantings.
29 Jindra suggested the Commission consider paving the inside of the hockey rink so it can be used
10 for younger -aged skaters. Mr. Hartman stated this will have to be discussed with Ted Severson
- 3 t since he was told it could be used as a soccer field. Jindra suggested the area behind the drainage
32 ditch could be used for soccer.
