Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
June 12, 2000
Page 2
are issues regarding the permanent anchors needed for soccer fields, as well as the scheduling
and coordination of practice and game times.
Thuesen stressed the importance that once the fields are built, they need to be properly taken
care of by both the residents as well as the City.
Jindra mentioned that there is a possibility that Sand Castle Park in Roseville, which is not
typically utilized by Roseville in the summer, might be able to be used by St. Anthony on the
condition that the Park be upgraded by the City and maintained. Additionally, Jindra stated that
New Brighton has offered some space for St. Anthony to use, as well as the City of Minneapolis
is looking into the possibility of providing space.
Ganley pointed out that the design and planning for Central Park has been in the process for
between two and three years and that specifics and details have been taken into consideration
and have been incorporated into the planning.
Bob Kost, BRW, reminded everyone that the park would be out of commission for about two
seasons, and it was important to ensure that other options had been arranged.
Jindra stated that the Commission is providing the best service possible in ensuring that the
optimal choices are being presented and considered.
In response to a resident's opinion that additional park space needed to be obtained by St.
Anthony, City Council Liaison Thuesen stated that the City Council has been looking into that
issue for a long period of time, and the Parks Commission has been as well. There are a couple
of possibilities in the plans, but definite options have not been finalized. Green space is a major
concern and obstacle for the City.
City Councilmember Amy Sparks, in attendance in the audience, reiterated Thuesen's comments
and stated that the City Council has been aware for a long time about the dire need of the City to
have additional green space. Additionally, Sparks stated that the Council and Parks Commission
have been working hand in hand to evaluate and correct the issue.
Jindra thanked all of the residents for attending the meeting to provide input and express their
interest and opinions with the redevelopment of Central Park.
Moving on with the agenda and the Commission's discussion on Central Park, Jindra introduced
Bob Kost and Augie Wong, BRW, and invited them to address the Commission. Mr. Kost
presented an outline of the status of Central Park and issues which needed to be addressed.
Various discussion ensued regarding the wading pool and playground area. Andra mentioned the
possibility of the skateboarding rink and that issue and price were discussed. Batting cages were
discussed, and Jindra mentioned that it was her understanding that the Sports Boosters were
going to be involved in that decision.
