Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
June 12, 2000
Page 3
1 In relation to space constraints on the soccer fields, Zurbey mentioned that it is possible to utilize
2 smaller spaces for soccer practices simply because many coaches are comfortable with using
3 cones for drills. Occasionally coaches utilize nets, but they are not always necessary.
4 Gary Palm, director of athletics at the high school, noted his space constraints with the high
5 school program and the availability of fields; however, he has been able to use creative
6 scheduling in order to make the athletic program work.
7 Mr. Kost continued to review the outline he had presented earlier with the Commission, noting
8 that lighting is the biggest issue, and some other issues concerning bleachers. Mr. Kost stated
9 that the costs quoted on the outline were current costs, and it would be a good idea to add a
10 certain dollar figure to the estimates in order to account for inflation.
11 Mr. Kost noted that his outline contained information regarding the renovation of the bathrooms.
12 The bathrooms by the wading pool would need to be redone in order to bring them up to code,
13 as well as provide an area for changing for the pool.
14 The other bathroom by the ballfields would have two ADA bathrooms, and would provide the
15 basic necessities.
16 Mr. Kost noted the recent increase in gasoline prices and is concerned that issue will affect the
17 cost estimate given because the increase in prices could create a domino effect for the
18 renovation.
19 Gary Palm suggested an eight -foot fence as opposed to the six-foot fence for the outfield fence
20 on the ballfields. Additionally, it would give more protection to the soccer field if the fence
21 were higher.
22 Jindra suggested the Commission review the outline list from Mr. Kost over the next month
23 before the July 10 Commission meeting. Jindra also suggested that the Commissioners consider
24 getting together, possibly with Public Works, before that meeting in order to review pressing
25 issues.
26 The consensus amongst the Commissioners was to meet at 6:00 p.m. at Central Park on July 10,
27 2000, and then return to City Hall for a 7:00 p.m. regular meeting.
28 Thuesen would be unavailable for that meeting and offered to find a replacement.
29 Jindra invited Jensen to talk about the skateboarding rink. He presented two handouts for the
30 Commissioners for their review. Jensen stated that some time ago, he had put together a
31 proposal of a skateboarding park in a plan not -to -exceed $50,000. Jensen stated that he had also
2 put together a youth task force and those individuals actually created the design. Through Public
-33 Works Director Jay Hartman, Jensen was able to achieve quotes from a paving contractor and a
