Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
November 9, 1998
Page 3
1 Roadfelt stated the Commission had discussed equipment which would appeal to older children,
2 adding the playground equipment presented to the Commission to date seemed typical and
3 uninteresting. Andra stated vendors had provided generic configurations as the Commission had
4 not provided specific data yet, but vendors have been notified the equipment must be unique and
5 multi-age. She added other options had been discussed, such as glider swings, tetherball, and
6 bocce ball.
8 Kost stated such items will be addressed under Phase 2. Jindra asked whether BRW has worked
9 on other parks around the metropolitan area which Commissioners might visit. Kost mentioned
10 Centennial Lakes park in Edina on France Avenue, which was excavated by BRW and renovated
11 into a series of lakes for the City's storm water management. He added the indoor Edinborough
12 Park in Edina as well as various renovations at Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun had been
13 completed.
14
15 Kosciolek expressed concern with regard to the time frame of the project and the necessity of
16 commencing planning immediately. Jindra reiterated she would contact Mike Mornson to
17 determine whether a physical survey had been ordered.
18
19 Kost stated a public hearing might be held separately from the regular Parks Commission
meeting to give the Commission the opportunity to make decisions.
1
22 Jindra, Kosciolek, Louiselle, Roadfeldt and Wolff agreed to form a sub -committee to choose
23 playground equipment for Phase 1 of Central Park renovation. Kost suggested the south area of
24 the park might present an opportunity for community involvement through landscape and
25 gardening.
26
27 Kost suggested the formation at a later date of a sub -committee to address playground equipment
28 for Silver Point Park, adding that the two committees could work together to coordinate efforts.
29 He suggested the Central Park Phase 1 playground equipment sub -committee might begin by
30 requesting estimates for specific requirements from equipment vendors.
31 VII. REVIEW SILVER POINT PARK.
32 A. Discuss October 13, 1998 Citv Council Public Hearin¢.
33 Jindra stated she had visited Silver Point Park and noted at least 5 mature trees had been removed
34 unnecessarily. Koehntop asked whether anyone was overseeing the project. Hartman stated a
35 representative from WSB has been on site, but the trees were removed early in the project and
36 will be replaced.
37
38 Jindra stated Todd Hubmer, WSB, will be in attendance at Parks Commission meetings
^9 periodically to provide updates on the progress of the project.
