Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
September 9, 2002
Page 4
Commissioner Ganley stated that because the project at Community Park sat there for months,
there would seem to be room to negotiate with Thompson Homes.
5 Mr. Wayne Mikkola, 3518 Skycroft Drive, stated he had enjoyed the view of the park from his
6 home but a few weeks ago they saw a hockey fence going up and with the fence up, they could
7 not see the park anymore. He stated their yards were lower than the park and all they have been
8 able to see is the fence and not the park. He asked the Commission to look at the alternative of
9 mobile fences so they could be removed when spring came and the hockey rink was no longer
10 used.
11
12 Mrs. Monica Mandell, 3520 Skycroft Drive, stated she wanted to push for beautification of
13 Community Park. She stated right now they see a lot of steel structures and it is very barren and
14 there is not much to look at. She stated the trail is very bumpy and hard to walk on.
15
16 Mr. Zurbey asked if she wanted the beauty or if she wanted the hockey boards to be taken down.
17 Mrs. Mandell stated that she would like the boards to be taken down.
18
19 Chair Jindra stated that Mr. Hartman was going to look into the hockey boards. Mr. Zurbey
20 asked Mr. Koechlein what would be the disadvantage to portable hockey boards. Mr. Koechlein
2 stated the boards would need to be taken down each year and stored. Mr. Hartman stated the
22 boards would be anchored but after five years the fence would start to look sloppy and would
23 loosen up and not work as well.
24
25 Commissioner Gebhardt asked if they wanted the entire hockey rink boards to be taken down or
26 just a portion. Mr. Mikkola stated they would need to take them all down. Chair Jindra stated
27 they would consider this.
28
29 Mr. Zurbey stated the contour of the varsity baseball field did not follow the print. He also
30 stated there was an issue with the pitching mounds on both varsity and freshman fields. Mr.
31 Koechlein stated he was not aware of any of this.
32
33 The Commission found some problems with the parks and discussed them. The consensus was
34 to look into how these could be resolved.
35
36 On the Varsity Field, Commissioner Jensen stated there was a problem with the pitchers mound,
37 contour of the field which allowed water to stand, and the lower fence along third baseline.
38 Commissioner Wagner stated there was a problem with the black pipe coming out of center field
39 and draining onto the field. He stated this should have gone towards right field, not center field.
40 Commissioner Jensen stated they needed backstops so the water would not pool. Mr. Zurbey
41 stated they need a gate so utility vehicles could get in. Mr. Koechlein stated there was a fence on
42 the north side of the field.
4 _
44 On the Freshman Fields, Commissioner Jensen stated issue need to be resolved with the mound.
45 Mr. Dunn stated they needed to have both mounds fixed. Mr. Zurbey stated they had the same
