Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
June 10, 2002
Page 3
Chair Jindra stated that the community is aware of the attempts -that have been made by to raise
the monies for the lighting of the varsity football field, and agreed with Anderson that they
should make a motion that includes a deadline.
Hartman asked to whom the motion would be distributed. It was determined that Gary Palm and
Sports Boosters representative George Zurbey would receive a letter that included the motion.
Vice Chair Koehntop added that they should not instill false hopes by giving the Sports Boosters
a deadline.
Hartman stated that he would determine the important points of the letter as well as the details of
the motion.
Motion by Vice Chair Koehntop, second by Wagner, that Wong outlines the costs associated
with installing the footings, and that Hartman outlines the cost, timing and the impact of the
proposed lights by the Sports Boosters to the surrounding residents.
Motion carried unanimously.
Chair Jindra referred to the portable satellite toilets at Wilshire Park Elementary. The school has
said that they would not pay for them because they have no need for them during the summer
months.
The Commission asked who is responsible to pay for the satellite toilets. Hartman stated that the
city should not pay for them because they are on school property.
Chair Jindra asked about the additional hard costs for Central Park. Wong stated that the
$30,000 for the additional lighting foundation was for going deeper, and the $10,000 for the
practice soccer field was for grading, which they will probably opt not to do.
Wong stated that the initial cost to light the hockey rink was $56,000. He stated that there will
be a significant savings by using the existing lights to light the hockey rink, and that the balance
will be re -allocated to fund other aspects of the park project.
Chair Jindra stated that the restrooms at Emerald Park were not open. She asked if they would
be open on game -days. Hartman stated that they had trouble keeping up with the vandalism, and
the associated costs, so they closed them permanently.
Hartman and Chair Jindra discussed different options including distributing keys to the coaches
and Sports Boosters. Hartman stated that they would likely continue to keep the restrooms open
and deal with the vandalism that will accompany their being open all the time.
Chair Andra referred to the players benches at Wilshire Park that needed to be moved back
several feet, and anchored with cement blocks. Hartman stated that the school was responsible
to cover the cost of the installation and maintenance.
