Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes <br />March 6, 2023 <br />Page 2 <br />1 The next Book Review will be for “The Climate Action Handbook”. A soon to be released <br />2 guide that offers the average person ideas, options, and a roadmap for climate action. <br />3 <br />4 Residents are invited to participate in No Mow May. Delaying mowing helps pollinators <br />5 survive the crucial period when they are coming out of hibernation. A growing number of <br />6 communities are officially adopting “No Mow May”, suspending lawn ordinances in May to <br />7 allow for untidy lawns. New Brighton actively promoted “No Mow May” with yard signs and <br />8 website information. The Citizens for Sustainability Group is suggesting that No Mow May <br />9 signs be created and residents are encouraged to join in. Sample resolutions were distributed <br />10 to the Commissioners. <br />11 <br />12 Upcoming Events include a Gardening for the Birds Class and a Plant Exchange. <br />13 <br />14 Chair Bordeau asked if people want to donate for the scholarship how do they do that and Mr. <br />15 Kunitz stated he can be contacted through dkunitz@gmail.com. <br />16 <br />17 Commissioner Holliday asked about the plastic free challenge and Mr. Kunitz replied on what <br />18 the challenge is. More information can be found on the Hennepin County website. <br />19 <br />20 Commissioner Fee asked what was done for No Mow May last year and Mr. Kunitz stated it <br />21 was not an official City campaign. <br />22 <br />23 Commissioner Doolan stated she went to the City Council Meeting last April and no specific <br />24 action was taken by the City Council. <br />25 <br />B.26 Village Gardeners Updates. <br />27 <br />28 Commissioner Lona Doolan provided an update on the Village Gardeners. A 2023 Project is <br />29 to change boulevard plantings to perennials. The Village Gardeners will design, plant and <br />30 mulch. The City is requested to advise on height restrictions and pay for mat, mulch and <br />31 plants. The City Public Works Department is requested Year 1 to water new plantings <br />32 weekly/as needed (June thru September) and pay for periodic mulch replenish. The Village <br />33 Gardeners will do monthly weeding in planters, periodic thistle pull in grasses and periodic <br />34 fertilize and mulch replenish. Suggested plant ideas for the boulevard planters include Black- <br />35 eyed Susan, Centaurea Montana, Dark Horse Weigela, Firecracker Sedum and Hakone Grass. <br />36 <br />37 Other projects include: <br />38 Refresh Veteran Memorial plantings. <br />39 Replace Spirea plantings <br />40 Refresh Marquee plantings. <br />41 <br />42 The requests for Public Work tasks and maintenance requests were included for Commission <br />43 review along with ongoing maintenance that would be done by Public Works and Village <br />44 Gardeners. Photographs of ideas for plantings were provided. Long-term plans are to refresh <br />45 Trillium Park in five areas. <br />46
